The Chinese director and scriptwriter Huo Xin is competing in the Official Selection with Bound in Heaven, which she adapted from the novel of the same title by Li Xiuwen. The drama centres around a successful young woman who lives in the city with her abusive fiancé and a lonely terminally ill man running a noodle shop in Wuhan. At the press conference she gave yesterday alongside the actors from the film, she explained that she had been attracted to the novel because it dealt with abuse and pure love, two subjects that she was interested in. The actors Zhou You and Ni Ni and Liao Fan all praised the director for the trust she had placed in them. Ni Ni highlighted her sensitivity and how Huo Xin could convey exactly what was needed. Liao Fan said he already knew the director in her previous facet as a scriptwriter and was immediately interested in working on what was her first film as a director. The filmmaker confessed that she had needed to significantly adapt the novel for the big screen in order to update it from 2006 to the present day, as things in China had changed considerably in this time.
