The murder of Hildegart Rodríguez, in 1933, by her mother Aurora Rodríguez Carballeira, is one of the most fascinating episodes in the annals of crime in Spain. Aurora secretly fathered her daughter as part of a plan to create a superior being who would redeem all the women of the world. A commitment that placed this self-taught woman, raised in a remote Galician village, at the forefront of feminist thought. Hildegart, became a young prodigy who had a huge impact on the intellectual world of the Second Republic. But she soon wanted to be her own woman and Aurora chose to destroy what she had created.
The producer of The Red Virgin María Zamora explained: “I found an article about these two characters and sensed that there could be a film here. Thinking about which directors could take on the project, Paula Ortiz immediately came to mind.” Both the director and Eduard Solá, screenwriter, agreed that the most difficult thing was to determine from what point of view they wanted to tell the story: originally, Hildegart’s gaze prevailed; in a second version they told the story from Aurora’s point of view, and in the end they decided that the interesting thing was to combine both.”
