Film Talk with Andrew Garfield, John Crowley and Nick Payne

John Crowley presented his first feature film, Intermission, in the New Directors section in 2003, before going on to direct Andrew Garfield in his first film, Boy A, in 2007. Twenty years later, this conversation follows the development of both careers over the years, delving into their reunion and how they went about the process of directing and acting while making the film they now present at San Sebastian, We Live in Time. Nick Payne, screenwriter of the film, will also take part in the talk, offering his view of screenwriting.

Director

John Crowley (Cork, Ireland. 1969) directed his first feature film in 2003, Intermission, followed by Boy A (2007), selected for the Panorama section of the Berlin Festival, where it won the Ecumenical Jury Prize, Is Anybody There (2008) and Closed Circuit (2013). His next work, Brooklyn, was nominated for the Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress Academy Awards and landed the Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year at the BAFTAs. In 2019 he premiered The Goldfinch. For television he has directed, amongst others, two episodes of the second season of True Detective and the episode Beyond the Sea of the sixth season of Black Mirror.

Andrew Garfield
Actor

Andrew Garfield is a two-time Academy Award® nominee, Emmy Award® nominee, and Golden Globe Award-winning actor whose transformative performances across major studio films, independent features, and on stage have captivated global audi- ences for over a decade. His body of work continues to evolve with each new role and compelling narrative.

He is also currently film- ing two projects in London: The Magic Faraway Tree, based on Enid Blyton’s beloved children’s classic, directed by Ben Gregor and co-starring Claire Foy; and Luca Gua- dagnino’s After the Hunt, written by Nora Garrett, where he stars alongside Julia Roberts, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Ayo Edebiri.

Recent credits include FX’s Under The Banner of Heaven, where he received his first Emmy nomination for his role as Jeb Pyre, and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick… Boom!, for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and earned Academy Award, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his portrayal of Jonathan Larson.
