Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The surprise film at the San Sebastian Festival’s 72nd edition will be Joker: Folie à Deux, the next chapter in Todd Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, aka Joker. Having been programmed in the official selection of the Venice Mostra, the film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will screen tomorrow in the only two Festival showings, running at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre at 8:30 and 16:00.
When the Festival recovered the tradition of programming a surprise film in 2019, the chosen movie was precisely Joker, with which Todd Phillips won the Golden Lion at Venice and Phoenix harvested numerous accolades, including the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actor.
In this latest film, Arthur Fleck finds himself institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.
Todd Phillips, maker of the trilogy starting in 2009 with The Hangover, once again co-writes the screenplay with Scott Silver (The Fighter). Together with Phoenix and Gaga, the cast also boasts Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Zazie Beetz, while the Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir once again provides the score. Phillips also produces, alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner. The film is being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and releases internationally beginning 2 October 2024.
Since 2019, the San Sebastian Festival has programmed the following surprise movies: Joker (Todd Phillips, 2019), Sportin’ Life (Abel Ferrara, 2020), Spencer (Pablo Larraín, 2021), Blonde (Andrew Dominik, 2022) and The Killer (David Fincher, 2023).
From 2022, the Surprise Flim has the sponsorship of the construction company Antiguo Berri.
