Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The renowned filmmaker, Victor Erice, appeared before the media yesterday before receiving his Donostia award. Asked about the healing power of cinema, he said that this was one of the virtues of art, “it comes into our lives and changes us, it’s something that makes us grow in knowledge. One of the great Basque artists, Jorge Oteiza, always said that ‘art needed to die for mankind to live.’ He also paid tribute to the film theatre as a kind of pagan temple. “The only thing that survives from the Lumière brothers’ original project is the cinema theatre. We’re losing one of the original goals of cinema. Developments in technology have meant that we now watch films in the privacy of our homes and this totally changes our experience as viewers. I defend the public experience of watching a film.” As for the myth that he is a meticulous filmmaker, he explained that, “I have the reputation of being a perfectionist, but the truth is that in all my shoots I’ve had to improvise quite a lot. Chance is a very important aspect of our everyday lives, and this is also the case with regard to artistic creation, especially in a medium like cinema.”
