The San Sebastian Festival will present a selection of five titles for family audiences at its 70th edition, to run from September 16-24. During the first weekend and on the second Saturday of the event, the Príncipe cinemas will programme the screenings of Movies for Kids, including three animated films and two movies combining animation with real-life images. All can be watched dubbed into Basque thanks to the collaboration of Zineuskadi as part of the Zinema Euskaraz programme.
Oltxiak (The Ogglies / Die Olchis), directed by the German Toby Genkel, introduces us to a family of strange green creatures who are never welcome anywhere because of their smell, until the day they think they’ve found their home in the Smelliville rubbish tip.
The Italians Francesco Dafano and Luca Della Grotta narrate in Trash the adventures of a broken cardboard box whose life changes on meeting Spark, a smaller box who will try to convince his new friend that all garbage can be used again.
Tom eta Jerry (Tom & Jerry), which includes real-life images alongside the animation, follows the high jinks of the famous twosome created by Hanna-Barbera. In the cast of the film, directed by Tim Story, real life actors like Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña and Rob Delaney share the spotlight with the animated world’s best known cat and mouse duo.
Also coming from the USA and combining cartoons with real-life characters is Space Jam: Aro berria (Space Jam: A New Legacy), a feature from Malcolm D. Lee in which NBA superstar LeBron James enters the magical world of the Loony Tunes alongside cartoon icon Bugs Bunny.
Rounding off Movies for Kids is D'Ortagnan eta hiru Mosketxakurrak (D’Artacán y los tres Mosqueperros / Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds), a Spanish-Indian co-production directed by Toni García and taking its inspiration from the famous cartoon series from the 80s that turned the classic heroes created in his day by the author Alejandro Dumas into dogs.
Dogtanian, a fearless and innocent young pup, heads to Paris to make his biggest dream come true: to become one of the King's Muskehounds. An adventure packed with friendship, honour, justice, action and, above all, heaps of fun.
The Ogglies are looking for a new home, but they never feel realy welcome anywhere. They stink, and they are, for most humans, just a tad too oggly. When the family dragon crash-lands on the rubbish tip of Smelliville, the Ogglies feel immediately at home and decide to stay there. But things won't go as smoothly as expected and they will have to show the locals of Smelliville that together they can save the city.
