Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Czech director Petr Václav made the documentary Confession of the Vanished in 2016 about the composer Josef Mysliveček on whose life he also bases his latest film, Il Boemo, chosen to represent the Czech Republic at the Oscars, which he is currently presenting here in San Sebastián in the Official Selection. Mysliveček was famous in his day but like many other composers of that time, his reputation has been totally eclipsed by Mozart. Václav, who already presented Parallel Worlds in the New Directors section here in 2001, praised the work of his director of photography, the Galician Diego Romero Suarez llanos, and explained how they decided to use a hand-held camera in many scenes and the most natural possible light. The instrumental parts were recorded live, but they dubbed the singers. Barbara Ronchi, who plays “La Gabrielli” based on a famous Roman soprano from that period, said, “It’s not me that sings in the film, obviously. We had the very best opera singers. They are the real stars.” For his part, Vojtĕch Dyk, who plays Mysliveček, said that what had been most difficult for him was to learn Italian.
