The Spanish director, Icíar Bollaín, is back at San Sebastián to compete for the fourth time for the Golden Shell, this time around with Maixabel. Her film is set against the backdrop of the restorative justice encounters that took place between certain members of ETA and their victims and focuses particularly on the two meetings that Maixabel Lasa, the widow of the Governor of Gipuzkoa, Juan María Jáuregi, held with two of the terrorists who had murdered her husband. The filmmaker was aware that she was dealing with a subject that affected a lot of people and still causes them a great deal of pain, but it was for this very reason that she had set herself a selfimposed obligation not to wallow in their grief. She also stressed how both Maixabel Lasa and several of the reallife characters who inspired the story had collaborated on the film which meant that while they were shooting there were moments where reality and fiction began to merge.
