For the second year running Juliette Binoche is at the Festival. If she came here last year to present Vision by Naomi Kawase, this time around she’s back with La Vérité by another Japanese filmmaker, Hirokazu Koreeda, a film in which she stars alongside another legend in French cinema, Catherine Deneuve.
This is the first time that they have been in a film together and she acknowledges that it was something special for her, “because Catherine is one of the actresses who have left their mark on all of us; especially because of that combination of beauty and light-heartedness that she conveyed in her best performances.” However she says that the actresses who really inspired her when she was starting out weren’t French and she mentions Liv Ullman, Gena Rowlands and Anna Magnani.
Last year when she was at the Festival she said that she was really looking forward to working with Koreeda. Although at first he gave them a lot of instructions, little by little, he learnt to trust his actors and left them more to their own devices, and she confirms that it was a wonderful experience
