Young student Zhang Gong falls in love with Yingying at first sight and decides to stay in the west chamber of the monastery where she lives to get to know her better. But a local bandit known as Flying Tiger sends his ruffians to surround the monastery in the hope of taking Yingying as his consort. The girl’s mother promises her daughter’s hand to the man who rids them of the bandits. Zhang Gong steps forward.
