Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Director Manuel Martín Cuenca is back at the Festival for the fourth time with his latest film El autor, which has just received the FIPRESCI award at Toronto. Based on a novel by Javier Cercas, it tells the story of a man who wants to be a writer but has neither the talent nor the imagination. Javier Gutiérrez, who stars in the film, claimed that he had never enjoyed preparing for a role so much, and described Martín Cuenca as, “probably the best director of characters in Spain.” The director himself explained that he had avoided any attempt to empathise or identify with the protagonist of the film: “I like characters that make the audience feel uncomfortable but who they can manage to understand.” For his part, Javier Cercas revealed that he had thought that Martín Cuenca was crazy when he told him he wanted to adapt a novel for the big screen that he had written 30 years ago, but he confessed that he really liked the result.
