Le Lion est mort ce soir, the film by the Japanese director Nobuhiro Suwa that closed the selection of films competing in the official section, is a homage to Jean-Pierre Léaud, Truffaut’s favourite actor, who began his career nearly 60 years ago in Les 400 coups. At the press conference after the screening of the film yesterday Léaud constantly praised Truffaut, who he described on several occasions as “my cinematic father.” He also confessed that Suwa had made him improvise a lot and that many of the phrases and situations that his character goes through are personal contributions he himself had made. “One day he put me in front of a mirror and asked me to improvise something. So I began to look for the presence of death in my own reflection. If this theme is in the film, it’s because of me”
