Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Emiliano Torres’s debut film El Invierno is about an old foreman on a desolate sheep farm in Patagonia who is fired and replaced by a young ranch hand. The original idea for the project came out of a documentary that the director worked on ten years ago in Patagonia when he got trapped in a snowstorm. He tried to find shelter and came across the ranch where a foreman lived all on his own, and that was where he took the first notes for this story.
The climate in the region forced them to shoot in two stages: after filming for two weeks in winter, they stopped and then started shooting again in summer. Torres explained: «It was worth it because we managed to reflect the power of the landscape, which is a really important aspect of the film. The director of photography, Ramiro Civita is an old friend of mine and we share the same vision of cinema. We wanted the film to maintain the spirit of a documentary with pictorial rigour.»
