The Icelandic director Benedikt Erlingsson is here in San Sebastián on a triple mission: he is presenting his film The Show of Show: 100 Years of Vaudeville, Circuses and Carnivals in Zabaltegi; chairing the International Film Students Meeting; and finally trying to get the funding he needs to move his next project forward.
He won the New Directors award here two years ago with his first film Of Horses and Men. “We live in a huge storm of entertainment; lots of films come out throughout the year. Festivals have the job of pointing out the things that are interesting inside this storm.” Winning an award at the Festival meant he could carry out new film projects. “The award really encouraged me. I always say that I was born as a director in San Sebastián.”
Erlingsson also says that it is a great honour to be chairing the International Film Students Meeting at Tabakalera where he will be helping to choose the best shorts that the students have made. He is delighted to have been able to share a space where he could debate with them. “They are from a different generation to mine and it has been really enriching to find out what they think about what they see.” He has also reached an agreement with the youngsters: “They can and should refute all my opinions. It’s all right not to agree with me.”
