The Chilean director and scriptwriter Fernando Guzzoni, who won the New Directors Award here in 2012 with Carne de perro, is himself a member of the Kutxa New Directors jury this year. He explains that the way he sees films as a juror requires greater commitment as he’s not just a member of the audience watching a film: it involves concentration, questions and then reflecting on the film afterwards. “It’s also a tremendous responsibility, because I’ve been on the other side and I really empathize with the directors and how nervous they’ll be about a world premiere, but we have all pledged to be rigorous, sensitive and demanding with the work they have all done.”
He also adds, “I enjoy the connection I feel with the other new directors in whose work I can see a vision that is very close to mine, in its visceral style, the daring scenes or in common subject matter.”
