Following on from Ewan McGregor on Thursday, Tommy Lee Jones also received a Donostia Award at the Kursaal last night in recognition of four decades of extraordinary success as an actor and director, which have included an Oscar and Golden Globe for The Fugitive as well as various other Oscar nominations.
The Award was presented by Official Jury member Julie Taymor who described Jones as “one of the greatest cinematic artists of his day or any other. She stressed his formidable range no matter what the part he played: “he can take us to place we never suspected.” After accepting the statuette, Jones said he wasn’t going to say anything in Basque out of respect for such an ancient and venerable language that he didn’t want to spoil. He thanked the Festival and said it was an honour and a pleasure to be in such a lovely city as San Sebastián in Spanish before switching to English. “As other recipients of this award have said before, it’s a bit early for a lifetime achievement award. I’m still young. I’ll be back for the next one.”
