Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The 60th San Sebastián Film Festival was officially opened last night at the Kursaal in a ceremony hosted by the actors José Coronado, Barbara Goenaga and Cayetana Guillén Cuervo who took advantage of the anniversary to look back over the highs and lows of 60 years of cinema in San Sebastián with the help of archive footage.
As well as offering a journey through the past the gala also provided the opportunity to run through the sections that make up this year’s programme with personal appearances by the Official Jury led by the producer Christine Vachon and the presentation of the FIPRESCI award by its secretary general, Klaus Eder, to Michael Haneke for Amour. In a video message, Haneke apologised for not personally picking up the award but sent along the actor Ramón
Agirre to collect it on his behalf.
The retrospective to Georges Franju was introduced by his close collaborator Jacques Champreux who reminded the audience that in the centenary of Franju’s birth this was the only place that was paying tribute to him and that he was very moved by this.
To close, Nicholas Jarecki, the director of Arbitrage, the film that was screened after the Gala, came on stage with the film’s producers and its two stars, Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon,
both previously Donostia award winners. Richard Gere recalled how special his previous visit to the city had been for him while Susan Sarandon expressed the wish that the public would have her back another time.
The gala was rounded off with a plea to “keep on loving cinema!”
