The Chilean film Lucía was presented in Zabaltegi yesterday. It is set around the time of Pinochet’s funeral in December 2006 and reflects the scars that the Dictatorship has left behind in Chilean society by focusing on the simple everyday events in the life of a seamstress.
Niles Attalah, the director of the film explained that they had aimed to make a film whose structure was conditioned by the limited resources they had at their disposal, while Actress Gabriela Aguilera said that getting into Lucía’s shoes was a very intimate subtle role, but that at times shooting was so much fun that they forgot that the camera was there.
The Guatemalan director Julio Hernández Cordón was also in San Sebastián yesterday to present Las marimbas del infierno, a film about an unusual band that combine the traditional Guatemalan instrument, the marimba, with heavy metal. Hernández has been to the Festival or various occasions and won the Horizontes award two years ago with Gasolina, and in the year before this, won various awards in Films in Progress.
According to the director his film was a pretext to talk about what creating in Guatemala meant for him and that he felt proud that a film like this could be at a festival with this level.
