Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Fermin Muguruza, the Basque musician, is in San Sebastián to form part of the New Directors Jury. He directed the documentary Checkpoint Rock which was shown at the Festival last year and was in the middle of making a series of documentaries about music in Arab countries for Al-Jazeera when the Festival got in touch. He says that it’s nice to get to see what the current trends are among new directors, and that he likes to go into the cinema without reading anything about the films he’s going to see so he doesn’t have any pre-conceived ideas. He’s already established good relations with his colleagues on the jury who go and see the films together and discuss over a beer and a bite to eat.
As for actors and directors he likes, he mentions Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange and recalls that some of his songs have been inspired by Wim Wender’s films. He confesses that he’s really looking forward to having the opportunity to have a word with John Sayles, who is another director he admires a lot.
