Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Buried by the Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés has already been screened at Sundance, Deauville and Toronto and can now be seen in the Zabaltegi Pearls section here in San Sebastián. It’s a tense thriller about a contract worker in Iraq who finds himself buried alive in a coffin with no idea how he got there. With only a mobile phone to communicate with the outside world, he’s only got 90 minutes before the lack of oxygen will kill him.
Cortés confessed it was incredibly challenging to make a film like this with only one character on screen, and that what motivated to shoot it was the fact that it seemed to be impossible to make. The shooting process took 17 days and turned out to be so realistic that Ryan Reynolds, the star of the film, was in really bad physical shape by the time he got back to Los Angeles.
