Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Perhaps best-known for her work in The Sea Inside and The Hours, British makeup designer Jo Allen is forming part of this Year’s Official Jury.
Coming from the world of makeup, she doesn’t think that she looks at films from a different angle to actors or directors. She usually takes on projects with really big stories or characters and get right inside the character so she feels she really relates to actors a lot. She thinks she’s a good judge of what makes a good film and can be really passionate about one she really believes in.
She confesses that she only chooses projects if the makeup is really important and that she likes to transform characters to make them unrecognisable. “Normally I like controversial subjects with meaty characters”.
As for her work on The Hours she reveals that the power of Nicole Kidman’s “nose” was due to the fact that she built it up layer on layer using a subtle translucent material that made it look amazingly real.
Her upcoming projects are the Egyptian film Asmaa and Simon West’s Dali starring Antonio Banderas. She’s really excited about the latter which she says has the most incredible script and a beautiful story. The only problem is that the Dalí Trust still hasn’t given its approval for them to start shooting, so she took the opportunity to beg the Trust to think again and give the project its blessing.
