Although Txaber Larreategi and Josu Martinez are only 24 years old this is not the first time they have had a film screened here at the Festival. Last year they brought the documentary Itsasoaren alaba to San Sebastián and this year they have two films being shown in Zinemira-Basque Film Showcase: Prohibido recordar and El tiempo de las manzanas. The former is about the women’s prison in Saturrarán where numerous women were locked up after the Spanish Civil War merely for having supported the Republic. The film interviews living survivors who provide personal testimony of this little-known dark episode and lament the fact that their suffering has never been publicly acknowledged.
The latter is about a Basque militant who has been deported to a small island off the coast of Africa where he spent 25 years living 7000 km away from his wife in the French Basque Country.
Prohibido recordAr will be shown tomorrow in the Victoria Eugenia while El tiempo de las manzanas will be screened tonight at the Principe cinema.
