The Spanish actress Pilar López de Ayala is here in San Sebastián to form part of the Official Section Jury. It’s the first time she’s been a juror and she admits that it’s a difficult task, as nobody likes being judged and it’s difficult to judge other people’s work. She also thinks that it is important to have a combination of actors and directors on a jury as each of them will judge things differently depending on which side of the camera they work on.
She’s confident that the quality of the films in the Official Section is going to be of a high standard and claims she won’t be reading any reviews as the critics’ opinions are quite different from those that people who have been selected to judge films have. As for her own career, she has just shot a film about Lope de Vega’s youth as well as another in Argentina; neither of which have been released yet. Asked about whether there’s a role she’s like to play, she replies that she’d like to tackle a powerful mythical role like Antigone if they made a version of the play for cinema.
