The Californian director Cary Joji Fukunaga is opening the Latin Horizons section with Sin Nombre, the story of a Honduran teenager who dreams of emigrating to the US by passing through Mexico. The filmmaker had never heard about this subject until one day while he was studying cinema in New York, he saw an item in the newspaper about a group of emigrants who had been left to die in a truck somewhere in Texas. The film was shot in seven weeks and has been screened at several international Festivals. The director thinks that the best way of measuring whether it’s been successful or not is to see that it is one of the best-selling pirated DVDs on the streets of Mexico.
