Antonio Santamarina is a film critic and historian and manager of the Spanish Film Library Doré Cinema who is currently in San Sebastián to form part of the New Directors Jury.
He thinks that the most important thing that has happened in the recent history of Spanish cinema took place around 1995 when directors like Álex de la Iglesia,Enrique Urbizu and Julio Médem brought out their first films, as did female directors like Icíar Bollaín or Chus Gutierrez. Since then there hasn’t been any equally significant turning point in Spanish film. Another aspect that he would emphasise is the fact that practically 40% of the films made in Spain are by first-time directors and that the latter are difficult to pigeonhole as they are extremely varied.
He thinks that although it’s more and more difficult to get a film screened, it’s increasingly easy to shoot a film because now you can make one with almost nothing. It’s quite a different matter whether these films reach the official circuits or not. He has the impression that especially as far as Spanish cinema is con-cerned this is a bit more difficult.
