The first time that director Michael Winterbottom was in Genova, the city that his latest film of the same name takes place in, he thought it would be an interesting setting to shoot in. “I even went there once with my two daughters” just like the main character in his film. After realising that a story that he had prepared four or five years ago fitted in really well with the city, he decided to film it there. “It’s as simple as that. That’s why I chose Genova” he said. Winterbottom is no stranger to the Film Festival; in fact, this is the third time he’s competed in the Official Section and he even had a retrospective devoted to him here in 2003. But although he loved the city, he said he didn’t intend to film here for the moment.
