Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Against a constantly changing backdrop, the 56th San Sebastián International Film Festival was officially opened last night at a ceremony hosted by the actress Belen Rueda and the journalist Edurne Ormazabal at the Kursaal. The song by Luis Eduardo Aute, “Cine, cine, cine” provided the thread that ran through the event, which as in previous years provided an opportunity to offer an overview of all the diferent sections in the Festival.
After the Spanish actress Pilar Bardem had announced that this year’s FIPRESCI award would go to There will be blood by Paul-Thomas Anderson, the directors Mario Monicelli and Terence Davies, who each have a retrospective devoted to them, and the director, Rokuro Mochizuki, on behalf of the Japan in Black retrospective, came out on stage. The 93-year-old Monicelli had the most enthusiastic reception when he stressed how the awards you get at the end of your career are unforgettable.
After the Basque actress Barbara Goenaga had introduced the Basque Film Day, Mirta Ibarra, the Cuban actress, did the same for the Latin Horizons section which she will be chairwoman of the jury for. It was then the turn of Made in Spain and Films in Progress, after which Joan Chen, chairwoman of the New Directors Jury came on stage to do the honours for Zabaltegi.
The team that made Vicky Cristina Barcelona: Woody Allen, Javier Bardem and Rebecca Hall which is opening the latter section then appeared to say that this had been a great opportunity to see this city again.
After the Official Section Jury chaired by Jonathan Demme had all been introduced, Richard Eyre and Antonio Banderas, director and star respectively of The Other Man, closed the ceremony, “honoured and flattered to be opening the Festival”.
