Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
More than 40 films from a wide variety of countries in all kinds of formats and genres will be making up the Zabaltegi section. As in previous years it will be divided into Pearls that have already been successful at other festivals and that are competing for the TCM Audience Award; New Directors, with first or second films by directors competing for the Altadis-New Directors Award, and finally Specials, that are mainly documentaries, chosen “for their quality and special interest” according to the Coordinator of Zabaltegi, Ángel Herrero-Velarde.
Apart from the new TCM Audience Award for Best European Film, one of the main new features this year is that the first screenings of films in the Pearls section will take place in the newly restored Victoria Eugenia theatre. These will be introduced by the filmmakers themselves before the start of each film. For example, at 7 o’clock this evening the Rumanian director Cristian Mungiu will be presenting 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile, which recently won the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film of the Year.
After the screening of all the films in the different Zabaltegi sections there will be informal discussions between the audience and the filmmakers.
