Raised in New York skid rows, Biagio Gazzara, known as Ben since childhood, grew up dreaming of becoming an actor. The son of a Sicilian immigrant, he soon drew attention for his brilliant and contained sobriety during his classes with Erwin Piscator and in his courses at the Actors’ Studio.
Gazzara made such a firm start to his acting in Broadway that his first stage appearance (Calder Willingham’s End as a Man) landed him the award for best actor in 1954. He was similarly nominated for his two subsequent works, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Hatful of Rain, both in 1956. He very soon received offers for television, where he played in and even directed numerous works. In cinema he debuted as the sadist cadet in J. Garfein’s The Strange One, becoming definitively established the following year, 1959, with Otto Preminger’s Anatomy of a Murder, nominated for seven Academy Awards.
John Cassavetes considered him to be his favourite actor, assigning him characters of complex psychology to whom he always brought a great deal of wealth: Husbands (1970), The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) and Opening Night (1977). He similarly worked repeatedly with Peter Bogdanovich: Saint Jack (1979) and They All Laughed (1981). Under the orders of Marco Ferreri, he brought life to the heroes of Bukowski’s novels in Storie di ordinaria follia (Tales of Ordinary Madness), premiered by the San Sebastian Festival in 1981. He has never stopped collaborating with new directors: with David Mamet on The Spanish Prisoner (1997), with the Catalan Jesús Garay on Els de devant (1994), with Vincent Gallo on Buffalo ’66, with John Turturro in Illuminata or with Todd Solondz in Happiness.
A certain aura of outsider and fame of untameable actor has shaped his identity over a long career, still fully active at the age of 75, as shown by his participation in Lars Von Trier’s Dogville, or his most recent work on the collective film Paris, je t’aime (2006).
