Bebo Valdés, the fabulous 85-year-old Cuban pianist, exiled in Stockholm for the last 40 years, travels to Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), where African music and religions have been preserved in their purest forms. There he meets Mateus, a Bahian musician who introduces him to life in the Afro-Bahian community, taking him to Candeal, a favela which, thanks to the initiative of Carlinhos Brown and the efforts of those who live there, has become a special community. There are neither weapons nor drugs in Candeal. What there is, however, is a music school, a health centre, and a studio to which artists from all of the continents come to record, attracted by the drums of Candeal. Using music as the driving power for all kinds of initiative, the people of Candeal have recovered their self-esteem and the hope that reality can be changed, that a better world is possible.
