Ever since he has been able to think for himself, Ernesto has done only one thing in life: cheat. He learned the in?s and out?s of swindling from an old trickster called ?El Manco?. His victims are careless middle or low-class people and his booty is never more than 200,000 pesetas. After a time, El Manco puts Ernesto in touch with the person considered to be the best swindler ever, Federico, an elegant, sharp and methodological imposter. While most citizens borrow money from the bank and have to pay extortionate taxes, Ernesto cheats bankers, politicians, generals... and never pays a bill, never mind taxes. Life couldn?t be better, ?til the appearance of Pilar, his former lover and sidekick, who left him years ago, having taken off with the loot from a sting. Pilar offers Federico what?s known among swindlers as the flawless heist, the big one before his retirement: a gullible, mean person rotten with illegal cash.

?I?ve only got this shot of my father. It?s a home video, but you can see it quite well. He?s next to uncle Eduardo and behind the rabbi. They are happy and proud to be circumcising me. The sound isn?t very good, but you can hear me crying behind the guests? cheers. The other day Dad went to Israel to fight a war. The war ended straight away, but he didn?t come home. We get letters, the odd call. Mum thinks that?s normal and my brother Joseph doesn?t even mention the subject. I don?t understand them. You don?t slit your son?s penis and disappear for thirty years just like that. It?s not fair. I work with my mum in a shopping mall in the Once district. The mall is my world, my world in extinction. Businesses change, my friends do too, some get married and most of them seek the salvation of a European passport. Aarón is already French, Pedro Spanish and I?ll soon be Polish.? Daniel is nearing forty. Laura is fifteen, going on sixteen. They say that he should be a poet, or a cartoonist, or both. He?s just over a long addiction and, home at last, tries to reorganize his life according to a strategy of basically doing exactly what?s expected of a ?normal? person. Everything that happens to him is more or less predictable, because that?s what it?s all about: he has to keep himself clean, pay attention to detail, submerge himself in the real world... and so on and so forth until he has accomplished the ten little achievements on the decalogue drawn up by an insipid national health psychiatrist. And, in the middle of all this, an unexpected event: Laura arrives in town looking for her brother Andrés, Daniel?s neighbour. But the brother isn?t at home and she decides to wait for him while she organizes around Daniel what could be a perfect world.

The next thing one of their sons, Manolín, comes home with yet another problem: he wants to take his first communion. Given that his parents, Manuel and María, aren?t married, and that the boy has never been christened, they have to seriously think about ?organizing their lives? and getting hitched. Infected by her son?s excitement, María arranges everything, although there is obviously no wedding without guests. And that costs money. What to do? But Manuel?s going to handle that side of things: he?ll ?wangle? a tuna intended for the Japanese (the kilo of tuna is so expensive that not even the fishermen can afford it), aided in his almost impossible mission by El Perra. Their local friends all chip in to help the couple in their act of love.

Pedro, an attractive homosexual dentist with no feeling of responsibility for anyone but himself, offers to take care for two weeks of his 9 year-old nephew, Bernardo, with whom he has had very little previous contact. The boy?s mother is Pedro?s sister Violeta, an outdated hippie who goes off to India. Pedro initially modifies his behaviour, not wanting his nephew to see what he?s really like, nor the type of life he normally leads, finding himself having to rise to a series of unexpected challenges (school, child upbringing, etc.). The relationship between uncle and nephew gradually becomes tighter and more solid, through real love, friendship and affection, until Doña Teresa, Bernardo?s paternal grandmother, appears on the scene, taking advantage of Violeta?s absence to see her grandson and commit emotional blackmail. In her opinion, a homosexual cannot be entrusted with a child?s upbringing.

Hay motivo is a feature puzzle consisting of small parts all lasting for around three minutes. Each of these pieces is directed by a different author and has the purpose of denouncing an aspect of the Spanish social and political reality which deteriorated so badly during the last period of office. The authors took encouragement from the legitimate right to the freedom of expression. They wanted to open the citizens? eyes and show some of the problems that the Government of recent years had neglected, manipulated, avoided or quite simply hidden from public opinion.
