New York 1943. Director-General of the French Film Library from June 2001, a post he held for ten months until he was dismissed owing to irreconcilable differences with the institution. At the present time he is preparing a book of memoirs about his experience during this period entitled "An American in Paris is Not Singin' in the Rain". Before that he was Artistic Director of the San Francisco International Film Festival from 1983 to 2001. During this period, the oldest film festival in America acquired extraordinary international prestige and tripled the number of people attending the festival. Thanks to his work while he was in charge of the festival directors as important as Mike Leigh, Spike Lee, Jane Campion, Léos Carax, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Alan Clarke and Guy Maddin established their reputations in the United States.
