Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Born in Bilbao in 1949. At the age of 19 he moved to Madrid where he graduated as a Director of Photography from the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía in 1972, the same year as Javier Agirresarobe and Angel Luis Fernández. Eleven years later, in 1983, he obtained the title of Director of Photography from Hollywood's American Film Institute. While studying in Los Angeles he collaborated with Bigas Luna on Reborn/Renacer, and a year later shot his first American film Miss Lonely Hearts (M. Dinner). He returned to Spain and worked on four films, including Valentina, 1982 and Crónica del alba, 1983, by Antonio Betancor. In 1985 he moved definitively to the United States where he has become one of the most prestigious directors of photography. Since then he has worked with directors like Andrei Konchalowski, James Foley, Hugh Hudson, Mike Figgis, Joel Schumacher or David Mamet and important actors such as Nastassia Kinski, Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino or Julia Roberts. He has filmed videos for stars including Madonna. Distanced from his Spanish roots by work if not by desire, he returned to film Mararia with José Betancor in 1998, with which he won the Goya for the Best Photography. One of his most recent works in America reunited him with Michael Dinner, the director with whom he debuted in Hollywood, on the film The Crew-The Team, 1999. His latest work to date is on Nel Slavin's Focus, filmed this year. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and of the Asociación Española de Cinematografía. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.
