Nominated for an Academy Award for The Grifters (1990), renowned British director Stephen Frears began his feature film career with Gumshoe (1972), starring Albert Finney. Born in Leicester in 1941, Frears studied law at Cambridge University before turning to the arts and becoming involved with London's Royal Court Theatre, where he served as an assistant to Lindsay Anderson. He began in the film industry as an assistant director to director Karel Reisz in Morgan (1966).
Frears' diverse works include such films as Dangerous Liaisons (1988), which earned six Academy Award nominations, The Hi-Lo Country starring Patricia Arquette and Woody Harrelson, Hero, starring Dustin Hoffman and Andy García, The Snapper (1993), adapted from the work of Irish writer Roddy Doyle and starring Colm Meaney, and Mary Reilly (1995), with Julia Roberts in the leading role.
Other famous films by Stephen Frears are My Beautiful Launderette (1985), Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), both produced by Tim Bevan, Prick Up Your Ears (1987) and The Van (1996). His most recent works are High Fidelity (2000) and Liam (2000).
Throughout his entire cinematographic career, Stephen Frears has shown a rare skill for inciting recognition from both the specialized critics and the audience, due to the fact that some of his films have been big box office hits. He also has a great deal of experience in television, where he has directed some twenty plays.
