Living in one of New York's Italian quarters, we find two brothers with completely different characters. They came from a wealthy traditional middel class family. Stony, who is twenty and the eldest, is a strong and enterprising youngster. His small bother, who is weak and introvert, lives in perpetual terror of his mother. Stony discovers suddenly, shilst taking care of his brother who has suffered a shock, that his vocation id that of taking care of children. His father, though, has other plans for him; he wants him to have what he calls real man's job.
