Queneau's novel is difficult to adapt because it moves from verbal comedy to visual comedy and back". Louis Malle is here represented by his best film, without a doubt. Its interest lies in certain allusions to other films, to literature, to private games. And all of it is mixed up in a premeditated disorder to satirise the demented life of Paris, as well as war and fascism.
