Hunderennen / Dog-Race

Bernard Safarik
Switzerland
Synopsis

The film deals satirically with the different assimilation attempts of a Czech, a refugee in Switzerland. The affective problems of this person during the transition phase between emigration and integration.

Ladislav Lapak is a Czech who, despite linguistic problems, has adapted magnificently to his new living conditions: which has led him to become a perfect Swiss, an enterprising citizen, when previously in his native country he was a genius and " live life". In his new homeland, his position allows him to use his old friend Alexander. A visit to his old friends in Prague reveals some interesting aspects to him. although they all disapprove of "real existing socialism", they only say this behind closed doors, they do not fight against it, but try to make the best personal use of the situation. His visit to Basel turns into a "shopping trip". Aledander, however, has neither the money nor the interest in acting as a "rich western consumerist." He is busy with two interesting projects. Paint a gigantic lantern for the Basel carnival and design a poster with a portrait of a dog race. In addition, he has enough to resolve his affective life with Elizabeth, who accuses him of taking his immigrant nightmares to the limit, with which fights are frequent. Lapak "the integrated" tries to help Alexander find his way, but it will cause everything contrary to what he proposes. Lapak will complicate your life, and will lead you to the most embarrassing situations.
