Thank you for dedicating this moment in time to remember my father and his first love. Perhaps some of you knew him, though most of you know him only from his films. He loved his work, which came first, he loved to laugh, he loved sports, Tennis, Golf, Football, and the occasional pipe. We had many enjoyable gatherings with our large extended family over sports, Oscar parties and Bridge games. I love my father as much as any daughter ever could. I adored him, shadowing him constantly. Walking on his back when he hurt, praying I could take away his physical pain.
Dad, though entering the business through nepotism was adamant to have his children stay away from the life he led. Maybe he felt the compromise of fatherhood to his family for the family he created with each film. You may notice that dad used many of the same crew and actors repeatedly. He was fiercely protective of the people he worked with, and, if you have read his autobiography, at times protecting then at the possible cost of the entire project. He was as he liked to be known, a “man’s man”. He loved his work, and had no thought to the idea he was building a following. Fan’s were at first a foreign concept to him, and he came to hold a special love for all Europe and all those who respected him for his work. I thank you sincerely for this special retrospective dedicated to this man whose life was his work, my father, Don Siegel.
