Set in 1987, Precious is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones, a 16-year old girl born and raised in a world you would wish on nobody. She’s pregnant for the second time with her absent father’s child; at home she’s tyrannically ruled by a bitter mother who keeps her imprisoned both emotionally and physically. Her school is out-and-out chaos, and she’s about to complete her secondary school studies with good marks and an unbelievable secret: she can’t read or write.
Monster’s Ball, Daniels’ first production, bagged a Best Actress Academy Award for Halle Berry, creating a landmark on being the first Oscar-winning film produced by a single Afro-American producer. His next production was The Woodsman (2004) and in 2005 he debuted as a director with Shadowboxer, presented in Zabaltegi. He recently produced Aaron Woodley’s Tennessee. Precious won the Grand Jury and Special Jury Prizes for the actress Mo’Nique and the Audience Award at Sundance ‘09. It was also screened as part of Un Certain Regard at Cannes.
