Craft Fair

Lur Kolektiboa has organised its craft fair to coincide with the San Sebastian Festival. Thus, occupying one side of the Plaza Gipuzkoa, 28 artisans from different parts of the country will show us how they work, exhibit their creations, and give a series of workshops. The fair will be decked out in the theme of the “Eastern Promises” retrospective organised by the Film Festival; this year’s stands will therefore be decorated in the style of Eastern European countries. The display and participatory workshops organised will also be dedicated to crafts from these countries. This means that for ten days, visitors will be able to enjoy activities including calligraphy and polychrome workshops, where they will learn to paint an initial in the style of Eastern European typography and decorate it using gold leaf and paint; they will discover how wooden figures are created with a chainsaw or learn how to make felt Matryoshka dolls. All of the workshops will be guided by the artisans themselves, giving visitors the chance to learn their trade first hand. The objectives of Lur Kolektiboa are clear: to foster craft-making, lend visibility to the sector, and to connect art and culture, all constantly based on the quality and authenticity of artisan work. As with the previous fairs, Lur Kolektiboa yet again enjoys collaboration in managing the workshops of the Asociación Arbaso-Euskal Herriko Artisautza Tradizionala Sustatzeko Elkartea. The Film Festival also collaborates in the endeavour, sponsored by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa through its Department of Innovation, Rural Development and Tourism, among others.

FACES OF CINEMA

IMPACT HUB Donostia organises, in collaboration with the Basque artist Jon Jauregi (who goes by the artistic name of BANAIZ) and the Film Festival, the exhibition “Faces of Cinema” The exhibition consists of twelve paintings, portraits of hugely famous stars including Denzel Washington, Woody Allen, Benicio del Toro and Liz Taylor. The exhibition will also permit us to view the portraits of Alex Angulo and Néstor Basterretxea, both recently deceased, thereby joining the symbolic tribute dedicated to them by this year’s Festival. The pictures will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition. Jon Jauregi Zubeldia (Urnieta, 1976) Going by the artistic name of BANAIZ, this Basque man aged 38 defines himself as a militant creator in absolutely all aspects of his life: personal, artistic and professional. He uses his pictorial work as a vehicle to express his thoughts on life, endeavouring to capture a never-ending range of sensations: ying & yang in movement or others marked by his fatherhood (his “Back to the Future” series of paintings), an aspect of his life that he defines as going back to the future for the second time. Banaiz conceives creation as apnea towards the innate. Creating apnea-style to reencounter, in the depths, that whole universe invented in the ingenuity of childhood. Creativity as a weapon. Creativity as a way of life. Creativity as an instrument for changing things... (Utopia). In order to flee from the great, the immense, the infinite, towards the small and personal... the internal, the eternal... Seeking to create but without destroying. Living... living another place, another time (neither past nor future, but something else...). Creating another place, another time... Breathing... Breathing by holding the breath, dying faster, to escape... even if it is just for an instant.
Place: IMPACT HUB San Sebastián (Urdaneta, 4 bajo) Times: 09:00-21:00, Monday to Friday Dates: 19 September-31 October 2014 Admission free

FIRST MODELS: RED CARPET

Yet another year, First Models will showcase the creations of designers from Gipuzkoa, and the Basque Country, to the world. Once again we will use San Sebastian Festival’s famous red carpet as a platform to promote our designers. Every night will see the traditional stroll along the red carpet to the iconic Kursaal for a photocall. Once there, the designer and a model wearing one of their creations will pose for pictures. They will then proceed to the gala taking place that day in San Sebastián’s ‘Moneo Cube’. Our commitment is to ensure the attendance of three designers who can display their creations: in the case of presenting a female look, the model will wear a long dress, and for a male look, a suit. The designers are completely free to choose the colours, fabrics, accessories, etc... always with the emphasis on elegant creativity. A competition will also take place between the looks created by the designers. The jury will be made up of various Gipuzkoan bloggers. The Award will be presented on Friday 26 at the Bataplán discotheque.

TOPIC

The International Puppet Centre, TOPIC, located in the Gipuzkoan town of Tolosa, collaborates once again this year with the San Sebastian International Film Festival. This Centre is one of its kind in Europe; due to its integral nature, it encompasses all aspects related to this artistic discipline: an internationally famous Museum; a Residence which provides accommodation for artists, where they create and rehearse their works; a temporary exhibition room; a documentation, archive and media library, all digitized; rooms for workshops and courses in person or online, by videoconference; a theatre with seating for 250 spectators, etc. The Centre itself has, ever since it was created barely five years ago, received numerous awards, in both the museum and educational fields. In 2012 it received the Silleto Award accrediting it as one of the best European museums of that year and it became a member of museums belonging to The Best in Heritage “Excellence Club”. We must also mention at international level the award received in 2013 from the Ibero-American Museums Observatory, a body in which the majority of Ibero-American governments participate. This body named the Centre winner of the III Ibero-American Education and Museums Award. And we mustn’t forget that it will host the World Puppetry Congress in 2016. This year, TOPIC will host the screening of one of the films in the retrospective: “Eastern Promises: Portrait of Eastern Europe in 50 films”: Grbavica (2006) by Jasmila Zbvanic, on September 26 at 22:00.

GAS NATURAL FENOSA: CINERGÍA

GAS NATURAL FENOSA has launched the project, CINERGÍA, a cutting-edge initiative to bring energy efficiency closer to the general public by means of the seventh art while promoting the talent of our country’s film industry. With this project, the energy company, which takes a step forward in its activity as film sponsor, has progressed into film production by selecting four famous Spanish directors –Paco Plaza, Rodrigo Cortés, Jaume Balagueró and Juan Cruz– all hugely popular with the public, to direct four short films on the subject of energy efficiency. These are four stories in the fantasy and thriller genre, without losing sight of humour, starring some of the best known actors in the country. Each tale is related to a certain aspect of efficient energy: installation maintenance, efficiency in the home, efficiency at work and sustainable mobility. Paco Plaza will present his short film Ultravioleta on September 19 at the Gas Natural Fenosa Efficient Home, located in Alderdi Eder. Ultravioleta, by Paco Plaza A woman who restores paintings must spend the whole night working to rescue a hidden painting. Her obsession and wasted energy will lead her to make a much greater discovery. A short film in horror mode directed by Paco Plaza, starring Julián Villagrán and Maribel Verdú, which shows us some of our most common mistakes when it comes to making the most of energy. The Gas Natural Fenosa Efficient Home In the Gas Natural Fenosa space we will learn what energy means, its value, and how to be more efficient through the different activities proposed by the company for children and adults from September 19-27 and 10:00 to 21:00. Also in this space and simply by joining in the actions organised every day, participants will be able to win film awards.
